When I was released from the RS presidency last month, I gave some thought to what my next calling might be. I don't have any control over that, obviously, but it's fun to speculate. Young Women's was out, because Bradley is the new Young Men's president, and I don't know how we'd work activity night with both of us supposed to be there. Primary is always a possibility--especially nursery, chronically understaffed--Sunday School teacher? A Relief Society calling? Possible...but the one I really wanted was Cub Scouts.
Zee just turned eight, and so he was just entering Cubs. I know that it is difficult to get enthusiastic people in scouts, because of the time involved and because of the ambivalence a lot of people feel about scouts. Although I have a little of that ambivalence myself, I really want my boys to have a great experience, especially in Cubs. So I thought that a calling in Cub Scouts would be simply perfect.
Just a week or so later, I was called into the Bishop's office and extended the call to...be a Cub Scout leader! Hooray! Wolf Den leader, to be specific--the eight year olds, Zee's group. My co-leader is my neighbor, Sara, who also has a brand-new Cub Scout. We are complete novices, but we are so excited to learn and teach. We've both done the online training, and I went to Round Table last week. I even made a foray into the Scout office in Orem--spending FAR too much money getting my boy outfitted. (I haven't even gotten my uniform yet. Sigh. More money.)
Today was our first den meeting. It was CRAZY, especially when you consider that we have, between us, seven children NOT in Scouts, under the age of seven. We met at the church, stuck the little kids in the nursery, and dealt with frequent interruptions. It helps that three of our boys already have their Wolf badge, and the two that don't are our sons. We have a little leeway that way. All-in-all, it went reasonably well.
It's definitely going to be an experience, but a really fun one, too.

I've been lukewarm on being in cub scouts, but I can think of alot worse callings. Those uniforms are pricey! Our cub meetings are the same time as mutual. It works out well for me, but sometimes I think it would be nice to do it in the afternoon.
