Rain Gutter Regatta

If it's August, if it's cub scouts, then it must be the Rain Gutter Regatta.

Our cub scout committee came up with a super fun way to do the regatta--instead of buying kits for the boys, and having them bring fully made boats to pack meeting, we instead cut a pool noodle (made of foam) lengthwise, then chopped the halves into boat-sized pieces. Each child (not just the scouts, which THRILLED my littler kids) at pack meeting got a "boat", a skewer, and a sail (rectangle of foam sheet from the craft store).

Everyone made their boats, the races were haphazard (to say the least), and at least one cub proclaimed "This was the best pack meeting ever!" Can't ask for more than that!

(Last year they hollowed out zucchini and raced the "boats" in a nearby creek. With the drought this year, apparently this wasn't really an option, but it sounds fun!)

Pack meeting was held in the backyard of our cub committee chair, and since she has a passel of little kids around the same age as mine, there was plenty of fun to be had besides the races. Plus, the treat was popsicles, and that made everyone's night.
