One of my dearest friends, Emily, got married on Saturday.
Emily and I met on the first day of graduate school at BYU. She did her undergraduate work at SUU in Cedar City, and came up to BYU to work with Dr. Griffin in mineralogy. Her desk was three over from mine, in the same row.
On a field trip to Yellowstone National Park and the Stillwater platinum mine that September, we gradually got to know each other. Hiking around Martin's Cove (one of the great side field trips not uncommon on BYU field trips), we discovered we had a ton in common (besides geology)--we had both gone through the temple the previous summer, despite choosing to not go on a mission. We had both been dumped by guys we thought we were going to marry, the previous spring. We both had tons of sisters. We both loved to read. And on and on. (We later discovered we had the same bedding as children, and that we chose the same McCall pattern for our high school formal dresses. Weird, huh?
The second year of grad school, we were roommates. That was the awesomest year, we had so much fun in that apartment with our roommates, Anna and Anna. We rented a piano. We went on camping and hiking trips. We threw parties, stayed up late on campus, stayed overnight on campus to complete projects, and took road trips together.
When Bradley came back into my life, right before I was to leave for Buffalo, NY to start my Ph.D, Emily was the only roommate who encouraged me to see where this would go. (The others were worried about my heart getting broken again. Em knew I needed to try one more time.) She threw me a mini-party in our room, complete with (dried) flowers and cheese, crackers, and grapes, the night I came home with a ring on my finger.
She helped me plan my wedding, she was there in the temple when I was sealed to my sweetheart, and she has been my good friend despite the differences in our lives (I became a mother four times, she became a professor at Utah Valley University) for the last nine years.
Less than a year ago, she met Martin. They started dating in the fall, and fell in love. Engaged in mid-February, married in the South Jordan Temple on Saturday. It was a beautiful day--just overcast enough to make picture-taking easier, but not so overcast as to be cold.
Bradley and I dropped the kids off at Grandma and Grandpa's, and got to enjoy the sealing and the luncheon just the two of us. (While we walked around the temple between the sealing and the pictures, we noticed birds' nests in the trees--complete with momma birds sitting quietly on their eggs. They blended in so well, it was a fluke we even saw them.) And the children thoroughly enjoyed the reception that night--Zee found a friend in Em's niece L., Gee loved the rock candy chocolates, and Em devoured several chocolate-covered strawberries. (Much to the detriment to her Sunday dress.)
Emily was a beautiful, radiant bride. I'm so happy for her and Martin. Congratulations, and here's to a happy, wonderful, fabulous family!
