Last year a friend gave us some tickets, and so I took Zee and Em over to have a few rides. BIG mistake. We didn't get the tickets until 7:30 pm on the first day of the carnival, which is the day that all rides are just one ticket ($1). (The rest of the nights the rides can cost up to $3 each.) So naturally, it was REALLY crowded. And Zee fixated on the ride with the longest line--the Ferris Wheel.
We waited for more than 90 minutes, getting more and more tired and cranky and grumpy and whiny--and it was tough on the kids, too. Finally we arrived at the front of the line--hooray! We moved forward to get on the ride, and---BAM! "Sorry, ma'am, you can't ride because you're pregnant."
What? No signs, no clue that this might be a problem, and, look, I rode a Ferris Wheel in California when I was seven months pregnant with Zee. I just stood in line in the July heat for almost TWO hours with a four year old and a three year old and now you won't let me ON?
Sorry. I'm still a little peeved about the situation, a year later. Anyway, fortunately my neighbors were in line right behind us, and so they took Zee and Em up with them. So it didn't ruin my children's night. In fact, the fun ride totally erased the long wait, and they couldn't stop talking about it for days. Zee made me promise to take him again the next year.
Which brings us to this year. I didn't want to live through the lines and crowds again. The carnival opened at 4pm, so I arranged for a babysitter to watch the two littles and took Em and Zee to the carnival. The lines were non-existent, the sun hiding behind clouds for most of the time, and a WONDERFUL time was had by all.

(The only problem? Despite telling myself I am no longer acrophobic, it turns out I actually am still afraid of heights. On the top of the Ferris Wheel, waiting for all the seats to get filled, I had to talk sternly to myself to calm down enough that the kids didn't notice. I still just about bit my lip through, though. Oh well.)
